Bronchial breath sounds are loud, high-pitched sounds heard on auscultation of the chest over the trachea and large airways. These sounds are typically harsh and hollow in quality, similar to blowing over the mouth of a bottle. They are normal in the trachea and central airways, but abnormal when heard in the peripheral lung fields, where they may indicate consolidation or compression of lung tissue.
