Dred Scott was an enslaved man, he was trying to sue John Sanford because since he lived in a free territory, he had become a free man.

The court ruled that since Scott was an enslaved person, he could not file a lawsuit. Which also meant because he was an enslaved person, he wasn't a citizen.

According to the court, Congress didn't have the power to outlaw slavery in any territory. This means that the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional.

In the North, a lot of people held a meeting to condemn the ruling. While in the South, they hoped that slavery would eventually die out if it were restricted to the South.

Brown gained control over the arsenal. But no slave uprising took place. Instead, troops under the command of Robert E. Lee killed ten raiders and captured Brown.

Brown did nothing further to encourage a slave revolt. At his trail, Brown seemed pretty sane. He sat quietly at the trial as he was guilty of murder and treason, or actions against one's country.

To the white southerners, the northerners response to Brown's death was ridiculous. A lot of the southerners were convinced that the North wanted to destroy slavery and the South along with it

Abraham Lincoln's election as president was seen as a direct threat to the institution of slavery by South Carolina and other Southern states. They believed that Lincoln and his administration would work towards banning slavery, and this led to their decision to secede from the Union.

Based on the primary source reading, South Carolina was seceding from the Union because of the election of Abraham Lincoln. They believed that Lincoln's anti-slavery stance and his policies would threaten the institution of slavery.

Based on the information provided, the most consequential event in causing the Civil War was the election of Abraham Lincoln as president. South Carolina's decision to secede from the Union was directly linked to Lincoln's election, as they perceived his anti-slavery stance and policies as a threat to the institution of slavery. This event further escalated tensions between the North and the South, leading to other Southern states also seceding from the Union. Moreover, the refusal of Northern states to enforce the Fugitive Slave Act and the passage of personal liberty laws added fuel to the fire by undermining the South's ability to maintain slavery. Overall, Lincoln's election served as the catalyst that propelled the country towards the inevitable conflict of the Civil War.
