The spread of slavery throughout the Mexican Cession land led to intense arguments in the 1850s over the issue of whether slavery should be allowed in these new territories or if they should be free states. This eventually led to the Compromise of 1850, which attempted to address the issue by allowing some territories to decide for themselves whether they would allow slavery.
