This pathway is known as a reflex arc. It is an involuntary and automatic response that occurs rapidly in order to protect the body from harm or danger. Reflex arcs can involve only a few neurons or multiple interconnecting neurons to relay information from the sensory receptors to the central nervous system and then back to the effector muscles or glands to produce a response.
