Social Movements Assessment guidelines

Social Media Assessment
Each group decides on an issue close to their heart. Students then must read up further on this issue, see how groups around the world are using social media to either challenge this issue, create awareness or change/ take ownership of the narrative. Students must then decide on a hashtag they would use; decide on the goal they are trying to achieve; what is their main message; how do they spread it; who are the stakeholders or members of civil society they are targeting; how do they reach these people; what other resources outside of social media do they use, who they can collaborate with etc? In the end, students must submit a product that address all or most of the questions posed above. The product can come in any combined form of the following; a poster, image/memes, audio or video, GIF (graphic/animated images) (could be a message, song, dramatic re-enactment, performance art *preferably in a safe space like campus etc). Students must create this content themselves or edit already existing content, so it speaks more to their project/campaign, strictly no plagiarism. They are also encouraged to post these on any social media platform to “test the impact”, a minimum of 3 posts over a period of a few days is required. Each group will also have to present their work during their tutorials.

Social media post/ poster/ artist piece or performance [15 marks]
Group presentations [15 marks]
***All submissions must be made on Blackboard. The submissions must include the social media posts/ campaign or artistic piece if it is virtual. Please note that the submission must also include any additional resources you might need during your tut oral presentation (eg; PowerPoint), however PowerPoint is not compulsory for this assessment.***
If the art piece is a physical one, please bring the art piece to your tutorial for presentations.

Presentation submission
- We will be looking for a brief background on your chosen social issue/ movement, and historical as well as recent events surrounding it.
- Then you must engage with your artistic, digital or social media piece. What does it mean or represent, this is important to explain especially if your piece is abstract or has important symbolic elements. Then explain what statement or change it is potentially driving. What impact could it potentially have?
- In both the main points above, we want to see you engaging with theoretical discussions taught in this course. If there are elements reminding you of a social movement theory in your art piece, then mention the connection the piece has to the theory. And the same goes for historical and contemporary background on the social movement/ issue.

Explain the above assignment with more clarity and in steps

1. Choose an issue that is important to your group and conduct research on how social media is being used to address, raise awareness, or bring about change related to that issue.

2. Select a hashtag for your campaign and define your goal, main message, and target audience (stakeholders or members of civil society).

3. Determine how you will spread your message on social media and what other resources outside of social media you will use. Consider potential collaborations with other organizations or individuals.

4. Create a product that addresses the questions and considerations outlined in steps 2 and 3. This product can take the form of a poster, image/meme, audio or video, GIF, or performance art piece. Content must be original and not plagiarized.

5. Share your product on social media to gauge its impact, posting a minimum of three times over a few days.

6. Prepare a presentation for your tutorial that provides background on the social issue, historical and recent events related to it, an explanation of your artistic or digital piece, and how it connects to theoretical discussions in the course.

7. Ensure all submissions are made on Blackboard, including the social media posts and any additional resources needed for the presentation. If your art piece is physical, bring it to your tutorial for presentation.

By following these steps, you will complete the social movements assessment and demonstrate your understanding of the role of social media in addressing social issues.
