The Namibian “National Professional Standards for Teachers” describe the competent teacher in terms of; (a) professional knowledge, (b) professional values, (c) professional practice, and (d) professional relationships. Under each competency, describe two (2) features relating to an effective teacher.

(a) Professional knowledge:

1. An effective teacher demonstrates a deep understanding of the subject matter they are teaching, as well as the ability to adapt their teaching strategies to meet the diverse learning needs of their students.
2. An effective teacher stays up-to-date with current research and best practices in education, constantly seeking out opportunities for professional development and growth.

(b) Professional values:

1. An effective teacher models and promotes a positive attitude towards learning, demonstrating a genuine passion for their subject matter and a commitment to the success of their students.
2. An effective teacher upholds high ethical standards, treating all students with respect, fairness, and empathy, and maintaining confidentiality when necessary.

(c) Professional practice:

1. An effective teacher engages in reflective practice, regularly assessing their own teaching methods and seeking feedback from colleagues, students, and parents in order to continuously improve.
2. An effective teacher is organized and prepared, effectively managing their time and resources to create a positive and engaging learning environment for their students.

(d) Professional relationships:

1. An effective teacher builds positive and supportive relationships with their students, creating a safe and inclusive classroom environment where every student feels valued and supported.
2. An effective teacher collaborates with colleagues, parents, and the wider community to support the holistic development of their students, recognizing the importance of teamwork and communication in education.
