Joseph Lane was a Democratic politician and military officer who was a strong supporter of the Confederacy during the Civil War. He served as a general in the Confederate Army and believed that the southern states had the right to secede from the Union. Lane strongly opposed the abolition of slavery and believed that the Confederate cause was just. After the war, Lane was pardoned by President Andrew Johnson and resumed his political career in Oregon.
