World War I (1914-18) came from the aftermath of the killing of Archduke Franz Ferdinad in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914. What followed was a stalemate leading to trench warfare on the Western Front. The forces of the British Empire including soldiers from Australia, New Zealand, Canada and India fought along with the French against the German army. The end of the war came after the USA joined World War I on the side of the Allies including Britain on April 6, 1917. The War finally ended on November 11, 1918.
