Zinc is typically extracted by thermal decomposition in a process known as roasting. During roasting, the zinc ore is heated in the presence of oxygen to drive off sulfur impurities and convert the zinc sulfide to zinc oxide. The zinc oxide is then reduced with carbon to extract the zinc metal.
