With the list of resolutions drafted, the Fathers of

Confederation representing Canada West, Canada East,
New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia travelled to England to
write the British North America Act. This legislation would
officially end their status as individual British colonies. They
would be joined together as a united, partially self-governing
country by an act of British Parliament. The London
Conference, which took place between December 18 66
and March 18 67, is represented in Figure 2.30. Why would
creating a new country out of the colonies in British North
America require a legal act of the British Parliament?,
the confederation of london

required a legal act of the British Parliament because British North America was a collection of British colonies, each with its own set of laws and regulations. In order to unify these colonies into one country with a centralized government, new laws and legal structures needed to be put in place. The British North America Act, passed by the British Parliament, served as the legal framework for this new country and established the rights, responsibilities, and structure of the government. Additionally, as colonies of the British Empire, the approval of the British Parliament was necessary to grant independence and self-governance to the newly formed Dominion of Canada.
