West African farmers needed slaves to help cultivate crops and work on plantations as they were unable to meet the high labor demands required for large scale agriculture on their own. Additionally, the transatlantic slave trade provided a lucrative source of income for some African rulers and traders, leading to an increase in demand for enslaved individuals.
