esaay personal narrative When you think about your life, what is your most vivid memory? Take a moment to reflect on that memory. Try to picture everything—where it took place, the people involved, even what you were wearing. How do you feel when you think about this memory?

Whether that memory is happy, sad, or somewhere in between, chances are it is so vivid because the experience taught you something about yourself or the world around you.

Often, authors choose to share life-altering moments from their lives with an audience. Memoir is a subgenre of nonfiction writing that focuses on capturing a specific memory of the author and revealing it through detailed writing filled with imagery. You will be introduced to several examples of memoirs throughout this unit.

For your portfolio assignment, you will draft a personal narrative, or memoir, of any memory you choose.
Essential Question

How can you effectively tell a meaningful, focused personal story?

When I think about my most vivid memory, one particular moment stands out above the rest. It was a warm summer evening, the sun setting in the distance casting a golden hue over everything it touched. I was sitting on the porch swing with my grandmother, the creaking sound of the swing matching the rhythm of our conversation.

I can still vividly remember the way she looked at me, her eyes full of wisdom and love. We were talking about life, about the challenges and joys that come with it. She shared stories from her own past, lessons she had learned, and advice she had to give. I listened intently, absorbing every word like a sponge.

In that moment, I felt a profound connection to my grandmother. I realized how much she had gone through in her own life, the struggles she had faced and the triumphs she had celebrated. And I realized how much of her strength and resilience had been passed on to me.

Thinking back on that memory, I feel a sense of gratitude for having had the opportunity to learn from someone so wise and kind. It taught me the importance of cherishing moments with loved ones, of listening and learning from those who have come before us. It also taught me that even in the face of adversity, there is always a way forward.

This memory has stayed with me throughout the years, guiding me through tough times and reminding me of the power of love and connection. Writing about it now, I realize just how much it has shaped me into the person I am today. It is a memory I will always hold dear, a lesson that will continue to influence my life for years to come.
