Portugal had access to skilled sailors and navigators, which gave them an advantage in exploring and establishing trade routes along the coast of Africa. They were also able to establish strong relationships with African kingdoms and tribes, allowing them to easily acquire slaves through trade or warfare. Additionally, Portugal's proximity to Africa and its geographic position along the Atlantic Ocean allowed for quicker and more efficient transportation of slaves to the Americas.
