One of the root causes of the rebellions in Spanish America in the early nineteenth century was the desire for independence and self-governance among the colonists. The colonies in Spanish America were ruled by the Spanish Crown, and many colonists grew increasingly frustrated with Spanish colonization and exploitation. They sought to break away from Spanish control and establish their own independent nations.
