The penumbra is the outer part of the shadow cast by the Moon during a solar eclipse. It is the lighter, outer part of the shadow where only a portion of the Sun is blocked by the Moon. The penumbra is the region where the sunlight is only partially blocked, resulting in a partial eclipse.
