Unit 4 Portfolio- Building Community: Architecture

For this portfolio, you will design a Postmodern building.

1. Use elements of Postmodern design in your facade (a facade is the front of a building). You can create your drawing by hand or digitally.

strong, simple, geometric shapes
bright, intense colors
extravagant color
exaggerated detail
Use a variety of media to show building materials
Use good craftsmanship and pay attention to details

2. Answer your Reflection Questions on your Process Worksheet:
Describe the size, shape, and use of your building facade.
Describe some of the Postmodern elements you used in your design.
What types of materials would your building be made of?
Would you enjoy using the building you designed? Explain.

3. Create a brief presentation showcasing your Postmodern building design. You can include images of your facade design, a description of the building's purpose, and any unique features or elements that make it stand out. Present your design to your classmates, explaining your inspiration and design choices.

4. Reflect on the feedback you receive from your classmates during your presentation. Did they understand your design concept? Were there any suggestions for improvement that you found valuable? How does the feedback you received impact your future design work?

5. Write a brief reflection on the process of designing and presenting your Postmodern building. What did you enjoy about the project? What challenges did you face? How did you overcome them? How does this project contribute to your understanding of architecture and building community?

6. Optional: Create a model or 3D rendering of your Postmodern building design to further bring your vision to life. Share your model with your classmates during a follow-up presentation, detailing the design process and materials used.

Save a copy of this worksheet in your art folder on your desktop.

You can fill this worksheet out digitally, print and fill it out by hand, or write your answers down in your sketchbook and upload a picture of your answers.
Use as many rows in the table as needed to describe the steps in your process. Be sure to complete the Reflection section at the end of the worksheet.

Reflection:

The process of designing a Postmodern building was both challenging and rewarding. I enjoyed incorporating elements of Postmodern design in my facade, such as strong geometric shapes and bright, intense colors. Creating a building that stood out and had an extravagant flair was a fun design challenge.

During the presentation of my design to my classmates, I received valuable feedback that helped me understand how others interpreted my design concept. Some suggestions for improvement included adding more detail to certain areas of the facade and considering different materials for construction. This feedback has encouraged me to consider different perspectives and refine my design choices in the future.

Overall, this project has enhanced my understanding of architecture and building community. Designing a building that not only serves a purpose but also contributes to the aesthetic of a community is an important aspect of architectural design. I look forward to applying the skills and knowledge gained from this project to future design endeavors.
