This example shows that…

In the story "Cranes" by Hwang Sun-Won, one act of courage is displayed when Tokchae confesses to Song-sam that he is a communist. This act was important to the plot and theme of the story because it shows the strength of their friendship despite being on opposite sides during the war. When Tokchae reveals his true identity, Song-sam is initially shocked but then chooses to help his friend, showing loyalty and understanding. This act of courage helps to emphasize the theme of forgiveness and reconciliation, as even in the midst of conflict and division, friendship and compassion can still prevail. The text supports this when Tokchae says, "Song-sam, I'm a communist. I don't want to lie to my one and only old friend" (Sun-Won). This quote highlights Tokchae's bravery in being honest with Song-sam, leading to a deeper connection between the two characters.
