The brainstem, specifically the medulla oblongata, is most directly responsible for the regulation of respiratory rate, depth, and drive. The medulla contains the respiratory centers that control breathing, including the rhythmicity center which sets the basic rhythm of breathing and the respiratory centers that respond to changes in blood pH, oxygen levels, and carbon dioxide levels to adjust breathing as needed.
