I think the author wrote "the crossover" for middle schoolers like me because it talks about basketball and family stuff that I can relate to. The main character, Josh, is just twelve like me, so I think the author wanted kids around that age to read the book and understand what Josh is going through. Also, the book is written in verse, which makes it really fun and easy to read. Some parts are a little sad and others are really exciting, so I think it's meant for kids who are old enough to handle those emotions. Overall, I think Kwame Alexander wrote this book for kids my age to enjoy and learn from.
