A prion is an infectious agent that consists of a misfolded protein molecule. Prions are responsible for a group of diseases known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans and mad cow disease in cattle. These diseases cause progressive damage to the brain and are typically fatal.
