Native Superheroes Get a New Look

These characters are superheroes. They've been in Marvel comic books for years. Mirage is a member of the X-Men. She's a mutant Cheyenne warrior. Silver Fox is a member of the Blackfoot Confederacy. And Echo is a deaf superhero. She is half-Cheyenne and half-Latina.
Now comic book fans are getting to see these Native American superheroes in a new light. They're starring in Marvel Voices: Indigenous Voices #1. What's different? This time, their stories are being told by Indigenous authors and artists.
To lead the team, Marvel called on the powers of Jeffrey Veregge. He's a Native American artist. He believes that Native American characters weren't represented well in older comic books. He says the characters were often created by people who didn't understand Native American cultures.
The older art and stories tended to fit stereotypes. Indigenous characters were often the villains or the sidekicks. Sometimes they were heroes. But their superpowers weren't very interesting. For example, they might have been able to talk to animals. Most had a less-than-super look, too. It usually included a feather headdress.
Marvel Voices: Indigenous Voices #1 is different. It's truly Native. Veregge says the new book is "correcting a problem that started a long time ago." Native American authors wrote new stories for the three superheroes. And each superhero is the powerful main character of her own tale. The artwork was also all created by Native artists. Veregge called working on the book "living a dream."
Now Marvel fans can enjoy the new adventures of Mirage, Silver Fox, and Echo. In Marvel Voices: Indigenous Voices #1, they're suited up for action. And they're ready to lead the way.
