Plants began to appear on land approximately 470 million years ago during the Ordovician period. Early land plants were simple mosses and liverworts that evolved from aquatic algae. These primitive plants were followed by more complex vascular plants such as ferns and horsetails, which appeared around 420 million years ago during the Silurian period.
