John Wilkes Booth assassinated President Lincoln because he was a Confederate sympathizer who believed that killing Lincoln would help the Confederate cause and avenge the South's defeat in the Civil War. Booth was also a staunch supporter of slavery and was outraged by Lincoln's efforts to abolish it. He saw Lincoln as a tyrant who was destroying the South and believed that his death would be a blow to the Union cause.
