During the Holocaust in Southwest Asia, also known as the Armenian Genocide, the Ottoman Empire systematically exterminated 1.5 million Armenians between 1915 and 1923. Armenian men, women, and children were rounded up, deported, and killed in mass killings, forced labor camps, and death marches. The genocide was carried out under the cover of World War I and was motivated by ethnic and religious hatred towards the Armenian population. The Armenian Genocide is considered one of the first major genocides of the 20th century.
