A simple machine works by either changing the direction of the force applied, multiplying the force applied, or increasing the distance over which the force is applied. This allows the user to exert less force or exert force over a greater distance to accomplish a task. By reducing the amount of force needed or the distance over which the force is applied, a simple machine makes the work easier for the user.
