Latin American countries tried import substitution industrialization (ISI) after World War II because they wanted to reduce their dependence on foreign imports and promote domestic industries in order to achieve economic self-sufficiency and stimulate economic growth. By producing goods domestically, countries hoped to create jobs, improve their balance of trade, and develop a more diversified and resilient economy.
