Rome’s first civil war began as the result of conflict between

the supporters of the conservative senatorial faction, known as the Optimates, and the supporters of the popular tribune, Gaius Marius. Initially, the conflict centered around the issue of land reform and the distribution of land to Roman veterans, but it quickly escalated into a broader power struggle between rival factions within the Roman Republic. Eventually, the civil war culminated in the rise of Julius Caesar and the eventual downfall of the Roman Republic.
