Volume of a COMPOSITE / COMPOUND 3D FIGURE

FORMULA SHEET

CALCULATOR

The formula for volume of a PRISM is V=(area of the base) x (height of prism).

This prism is a composite figure with 2 prisms combined.

Find the volume of each prism separately then add the volumes together.

Part 1: Find the volume of the RECTANGULAR PRISM:

Volume = (length x width x height)
Volume = (4 yd x 3 yd x 6 yd)
Volume = 72 cubic yards

Part 2: Find the volume of the TRIANGULAR PRISM:
Volume = (1/2 base x height of triangle x height of prism)
Volume = (1/2 x 4 yd x 5 yd x 8 yd)
Volume = 80 cubic yards

Part 3: Find the SUM of the volume of the 2 prisms:
Total Volume = Volume of Rectangular Prism + Volume of Triangular Prism
Total Volume = 72 cubic yards + 80 cubic yards
Total Volume = 152 cubic yards

Therefore, the total volume of the composite figure made up of a rectangular prism and a triangular prism is 152 cubic yards.
