1.(a)()What is a machine?

(ii)State two uses of gears
(iii)Define the velocity
ratio for a pair of gearwheels
(iv)How can the mechanical advantage of a
gear system be increased?

(i) A machine is a device that uses energy to perform some sort of work or task.

(ii) Two uses of gears include transmitting motion and changing the speed or direction of motion.

(iii) The velocity ratio for a pair of gearwheels is the ratio of the angular velocity of the driver gear to the angular velocity of the driven gear.

(iv) The mechanical advantage of a gear system can be increased by using larger gears or increasing the number of teeth on the gears. Additionally, using different sizes of gears in a compound gear system can also increase mechanical advantage.
