Topic Choices:

You will use your novel that you selected for the novel study as inspiration for your narrative. You will maintain the parameters of your novel, such as the setting, main characters, and other key details.

Using the details from your novel, chose one of the following options to write your story:

Rewrite a scene from the novel from a different character’s viewpoint.

Things to consider:

The dialogue of the moment will stay the same, but does your character interpret the tone or meaning of the dialogue differently?

How might the character feel or what thoughts might they have that would be different from what is originally presented in the scene?

Continue the story where it left off.

Things to consider:

What predictions can you make about what the characters might do AFTER the story is over? What new conflicts might arise?

Did the characters learn a lesson at the end of the story? How does that lesson impact the character in the future?

Insert a missing piece of the story

Things to consider:

Is there a time jump in your story where you could fill the gap?

Is there a section of the story that isn’t explained where you must infer? What may have happened during that moment?

Are there events that would have occurred BEFORE your story began that you could write about?

Option: Rewrite a scene from the novel from a different character’s viewpoint.

For this exercise inspired by "When Stars are Scattered," I will rewrite a scene from the perspective of Omar, Abdullah's younger brother. In the original scene, Abdullah is struggling with a difficult decision, contemplating whether to leave the refugee camp to pursue an education while risking leaving Omar behind. From Omar's viewpoint, I will delve into his feelings of fear and uncertainty about potentially being separated from his beloved brother. As the brothers share a heartfelt conversation, Omar's internal struggles and unspoken fears will be highlighted, showcasing his deep bond with Abdullah and his fears of being left alone in the challenging environment of the camp. Through Omar's perspective, readers will gain insight into his emotional journey and the profound impact of Abdullah's decision on their relationship.
