Originally constructed in the early 1970s by sculptor Fritz Koenig, this bronze sphere sat outside the original World Trade Center in New York City as a symbol of peace through world trade. When two planes toppled the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in September 2001, the sphere was badly dented and damaged. Six months after the attack on the World Trade Center, the sculpture was re-erected in Battery Park, several blocks from its original location. Perhaps surprisingly, no attempts were made to repair the shiny sculpture. Instead, an eternal flame was installed at its base, memorializing the nearly 3,000 victims of the September bombing. New York always intended to return The Sphere sculpture to Liberty Square, the site of the World Trade Center. New York completed this work and The Sphere was unveiled on September 6, 2017, less than a week before the 16th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Answer the reflective questions in your art sketchbook. You will submit your thoughts to a discussion board during the Evaluate section of the lesson. What is the message of the monument? Why was a particular location chosen for its display? Discuss both the original and present-day locations. Do you agree with the chosen location for display? Do you feel that it is the best way to communicate the message of the piece? Given the tragedy that occurred at the location, is it appropriate to locate the memorial here? Why or why not? Suggest another location for the piece and explain your choice. Do you think it was the right decision not to repair the damage to the sculpture? Why or why not

The message of The Sphere monument is one of peace through world trade and remembrance of the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The sculpture was originally located outside the World Trade Center as a symbol of this message, but after being damaged in the attacks, it was moved to Battery Park. The particular location of Battery Park was chosen as a temporary site for The Sphere to allow for its preservation and allow time for planning where to permanently display it. The decision to eventually return The Sphere to Liberty Square, near the World Trade Center site, was made to honor the history and memory of the sculpture's original purpose as a symbol of peace through trade and as a memorial to the events of 9/11.

I believe that the chosen location for the display of The Sphere is fitting and appropriate. Placing it near the World Trade Center site allows for it to continue to serve as a memorial to the victims of the attacks and as a symbol of resilience and remembrance. The location communicates the message of the piece effectively, as it ties the sculpture directly to the tragedy that occurred at that location.

In terms of repairing the damage to the sculpture, I think it was the right decision not to repair it. The dents and damage on the sculpture serve as a powerful reminder of the events of 9/11 and the resilience of the city and its people. By leaving the damage visible, it enhances the emotional impact and significance of the monument.

If I were to suggest another location for The Sphere, I would consider placing it in a prominent public space in New York City, such as Central Park or another well-known park. This would allow for a wider audience to engage with the sculpture and its message of peace and remembrance. However, I believe that the decision to return The Sphere to Liberty Square was the most fitting choice given its connection to the events of 9/11.
