Definition of clan

Feudal Japan

In feudal Japan, a clan referred to a group of people who were related by blood or marriage and shared a common ancestor. Clans were often powerful and influential in society, with their own territory, economy, and military forces. They played a key role in the political structure of Japan, forming alliances and rivalries with other clans. Members of a clan were expected to follow the leadership of the clan head, who was usually the eldest male member of the family.
