Directions: Answer the analytical questions below regarding pgs. 13-18 of The Great Gatsby, being careful with control of language (grammar).

(5) Given what we know of Daisy’s life, explain why it might make sense that, upon her daughter’s birth, she would wish for her to grow up to be “...a beautiful little fool.”

(6) Reflect on Daisy’s dialogue. Look at the things that she says and how she says them. If it’s true (and it is) that a person living with depression masks it with excessive joy, make an argument that Daisy may be in a state of depression.

(7) Explain the irony in Tom Buchanan saying - regarding Jordan Baker - “They oughtn’t to let her run around the country this way.”

(8) Define Jordan Baker’s profession.

(5) Given Daisy’s background as a wealthy socialite trapped in a loveless marriage, it may make sense that she would wish for her daughter to grow up to be a “beautiful little fool.” Daisy herself relies on her beauty and charm to navigate the shallow and materialistic world she lives in, and she may wish the same for her daughter so that she can easily attract a wealthy and powerful husband. Additionally, Daisy may understand the limitations and struggles that come with intelligence and independence, and so she may wish to spare her daughter from these challenges by encouraging her to be naive and foolish.

(6) Daisy’s dialogue often consists of empty pleasantries, superficial comments, and exaggerated expressions of joy. This excessive display of happiness could be seen as a way for Daisy to mask her true feelings of emptiness, dissatisfaction, and sadness. Her marriage to Tom Buchanan is loveless and unfulfilling, and despite having everything she could want materially, Daisy may feel trapped and isolated. The constant need to put on a happy façade could be a sign of underlying depression and inner turmoil.

(7) The irony in Tom Buchanan’s statement about Jordan Baker is that he himself is guilty of engaging in extramarital affairs and living a promiscuous lifestyle. He criticizes Jordan for “running around the country” as if it is a moral failing, when in reality, he himself is engaging in similar behavior. This highlights the hypocrisy of Tom’s character, as he holds others to a different standard than he holds himself.

(8) Jordan Baker’s profession is that of a professional golfer. She is described as a successful and skilled athlete who is well-known in the golfing world. Her profession allows her to travel extensively and participate in high-profile tournaments, showcasing her talent and competitiveness.
