Was the south’s military strategy, primarily defensive or offensive?

The South's military strategy during the Civil War was primarily defensive. The Confederate forces focused on protecting their territory and defending against Union invasions, rather than launching large-scale offensives. This defensive approach was partially due to the Confederacy's limited resources and manpower compared to the Union, as well as their goal of simply trying to outlast the Union army in order to gain diplomatic recognition and independence. While there were some offensive campaigns launched by the Confederates, such as the invasion of the North during the Gettysburg campaign, overall their strategy was more defensive in nature.
