(1) The history of vaccines began with the introduction of infectious diseases in humans. (2) The history also began with the quest of immunization. (3) Immunization is an ancient practice that dates back hundreds of years. (4) Immunization means being immune or protected from a disease. (5) The practices before the development of vaccines may seem strange today. (6) In 17th century China, Buddhist monks drank snake venom for immunity from snakes. (7) They also practiced variolation, which is smearing of a skin tear with cowpox. (8) Variolation was done to have immunity to smallpox. (9) This practice was also popular in Africa before it spread to Europe and America.

(10) In 1796, Edward Jenner brought a big change to immunization. (11) He inoculated a 13-year-old boy with vaccina virus. (12) To inoculate is to inject in order to protect from a disease. (13) The vaccina virus is cowpox. (14) Jenner’s vaccine showed immunity to smallpox. (15) Two years later, the first smallpox vaccine was developed. (16) In the next two centuries, mass smallpox immunization took place. (17) As a result, the disease was eradicated, or completely removed, from the world in 1979.

(18) The next scientist who made big leaps in immunization was Louis Pasteur. (19) His experiments resulted in the development of cholera vaccine (1897) and anthrax vaccine (1904). (20) In the late 19th century, the plague vaccine was also invented. (21) Bacterial vaccine development flourished between 1890 and 1950. (22) In the next 35 years, virus tissue culture methods were developed, taking care of diseases like polio. (23) More research and experiments have been conducted over the years to provide immunity for new diseases that break out in humans as well as animals. (24) The science of immunization will experience more changes.
