Why is melting ice a physical change and not a chemical change?

Melting ice is considered a physical change because the change does not alter the chemical composition of the substance. When ice melts, it is still H2O, just in a different state (solid to liquid). A chemical change, on the other hand, involves a change in the chemical makeup of a substance, resulting in the formation of new substances with different chemical properties. Since melting ice only changes its physical state, it is classified as a physical change.
