The father's reaction to the traffic jam is impatience and irrational. When sitting in traffic not moving he expresses his irritation by saying, "Are we going to be stuck in this damned traffic forever?" (Desai 10). This shows he is irritated because they are not moving and sitting in traffic for a long time. Also while sitting in traffic the father happens to start stepping on the accelerator as traffic starts moving. "The father too was pressing down on the accelerator, beating upon the steering wheel, and the children settling into position, all screaming, “Sim-la! Sim-la!” in unison." (Desai 479) This shows he is impatient and want to arrive at the destination as fast as possible.

The father's response to the traffic jam is one of impatience and irrationality. As they sit in the gridlocked traffic, he expresses his irritation by exclaiming, "Are we going to be stuck in this wretched traffic forever?" (Desai 10). Clearly frustrated by the lack of progress, he shows his annoyance at being stationary for an extended period of time. Additionally, while waiting in traffic, the father impulsively presses down on the accelerator as soon as the cars ahead begin to move. "The father too was pressing down on the accelerator, pounding on the steering wheel, while the children, settling into their seats, all chant in unison, 'Sim-la! Sim-la!'" (Desai 479). This demonstrates his impatience and eagerness to reach their destination as quickly as possible.
