Why were the North and the South fighting? What caused the Civil War?

The primary cause of the American Civil War was slavery. The Northern states had industrialized and no longer relied on slave labor, while the Southern states continued to rely on slave labor for their agricultural economy, particularly for cotton production. As tensions between the North and South grew over issues such as states' rights and the expansion of slavery into new territories, the Southern states seceded from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America, leading to the outbreak of the Civil War.
