Receptor Antagonists

Classification of H1 receptor antagonists:
1. Potent and sedative: such as diphenhydramine and
promethazine.
2. Potent but less sedative: such as cyclizine and
chlorpheniramine
3. Less potent and less sedative: such as pheniramine
4. Non-sedative: ( 2nd generation anti-histamines) such
as terfenadine, loratadine and cetrizine
 Newer generation agents are relatively free of central
depressant effects
 These possess anti-emetic effects

in addition to their anti-allergic properties, making them useful in the treatment of motion sickness and nausea. They are also preferred in situations where sedation is undesirable, such as during the day or when driving or operating machinery.
