South Carolina was placed under military control during the Reconstruction Era following the American Civil War because of the widespread lawlessness, violence, and resistance to the integration of newly freed African Americans into society. The federal government believed that the state government was unable or unwilling to protect the rights of all citizens, particularly African Americans, and therefore deemed it necessary to have military forces oversee the transition to a more stable and inclusive society.
