Define the term ‘equinox’ as it relates to the rotation of planet Earth

An equinox is a moment in time during Earth's orbit when the plane of the Earth's equator passes through the center of the sun, resulting in equal length of day and night across the planet. This occurs twice a year, usually around March 20th and September 22nd, marking the beginning of spring and autumn respectively. During an equinox, the Sun is directly above the equator, and the Earth's axis is neither tilted towards nor away from the Sun, resulting in nearly equal 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness worldwide.
