China is classified as an autocratic or authoritarian regime, as it is ruled by the Communist Party of China and does not have a democratic system in place. The government tightly controls political dissent and restricts freedom of speech and assembly. While there are some elements of a political system in China that may resemble democracy, such as regular elections at the local level, ultimate power and decision-making authority lies with the Communist Party.
