One way to identify a fusion reaction is by the total mass of the reactants being less than the total mass of the products, as mass is converted into energy during fusion reactions. Another criteria is the high temperatures and pressures required to overcome the electrostatic repulsion between positively charged nuclei in order for fusion to occur.
