The Aztecs created more foreign land for the city of Tenochtitlan by constructing artificial islands in the lake surrounding the city. These islands, known as chinampas, were built by weaving together layers of reeds, mud, and soil to form a solid foundation. They were then anchored in place with wooden stakes and rocks. The Aztecs used these chinampas to grow crops such as maize, beans, and squash, which helped to sustain the growing population of Tenochtitlan.
