What is follicle-stimulating hormone?

Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) is a hormone produced and released by the pituitary gland. It plays a key role in regulating the reproductive processes in both males and females. In females, FSH stimulates the development of ovarian follicles and the production of estrogen. In males, FSH is necessary for sperm production. Abnormal levels of FSH can indicate issues with fertility and reproductive health.
