A volcano is a mountain or hill that has a crater or vent through which molten rock, ash, and gases are expelled from beneath the Earth's surface. When this material erupts, it forms lava flows, ash clouds, and volcanic bombs. Volcanoes can be active, dormant, or extinct, and are typically located near the boundaries of tectonic plates.
