Questions

1 Are these contracts fair or unfair? Support your response with relevant details.

This contract appears to be unfair as it is essentially continuing the relationship between a former slave owner and a former slave, now freedman, under the guise of a labor contract. The contract essentially replicates the conditions of slavery, with the freedman agreeing to obey all lawful commands and provide faithful service in exchange for payment. This perpetuates the unequal power dynamic between the two parties and does not provide true freedom or autonomy for the freedman. Additionally, the amount of payment ($4.00 per month) is likely insufficient considering the labor being provided.

Overall, the contract does not appear to be fair as it does not truly acknowledge the freedman's newly granted freedom and rights as a freed individual. It is important for labor contracts to be equitable and respectful of the rights and autonomy of all parties involved.
