One abiotic change that may increase pup mortality for ringed seals is warming temperatures leading to earlier snow melt. If the snowdrifts in which the lairs are carved out of melt too early, the seal pups may be exposed to predators or harsh weather conditions before they are ready. This can result in higher pup mortality rates as they may not be able to survive outside of their protected lairs.
