The Missouri Compromise, passed in 1820, ensured that Missouri would enter the Union as a slave state and Maine would enter as a free state in order to maintain a balance of power between free and slave states in the United States. The compromise also prohibited slavery north of the 36°30’ parallel in the Louisiana Territory. This agreement was later overturned by the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854.
