REPETITION- occurs when a line or a sequence of lines appears more than once.
ASSONANCE-is the repetition of the same or similar vowel sounds in a series of words, usually words with different consonant sounds.

Read the poem, then answer the questions.

1. There once was a filly named Blaze.
2. Who wouldn't come out of the rain.
3. First that filly got soaked.
4.Then she grew hoarse and croaked.
5.Which put out that filly named Blaze.

1. In which lines do you see repetition? He put 1 & 5 (filly named Blaze)

2. What is the example of assonance in the repeated words?

3. What other examples do you see in line 1?

4. What is the example of assonance in line 2?

5. Is there an example in line 3?

6. Is there an example in line 4?

Is this the correct answers?

1-1 and 5
2-soaked, croaked
3-named, blaze
4-soaked, croaked
5-first,filly
6-which,filly

2. The repeated words are "filly named blaze." The assonance occurs in "named Blaze."

3. Line 1 assonance: "was once"

4. Line 2 assonance: "wouldn't come"

5. Line 3 assonance: "first filly"

6. Line 4 assonance: "hoarse, croaked"

This is a great little poem, full of puns and figures of speech.

First, the filly's name is BLAZE... which is another word for fire.

The filly is in the rain -- and she gets 'put out'. Does this mean she was upset by the rain, or did the rain put out her 'Blaze'?

Hoarse could refer to 'horse' OR it could mean her voice didn't work right any more.

Croaked could mean 'she sounded like a frog' or it COULd mean she stopped working, or even that she died (My truck finally croaked with 300,000 miles on it)

Pretty complicated poem for fifth grade, huh!
